Aerospace

By 2028, the Queensland aerospace industry will be recognised as a leading centre in Australasia and South East Asia for aerospace innovation in training, niche manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) applications for military and civil markets.

Covid has had a dramatic impact on the aerospace industry in Queensland, particularly in the aviation sector. The Queensland Government continues to stimulate the aerospace industry through investment in infrastructure, technology and international promotion.

Strategies under their 10-year roadmap and action plan include:

  • to grow Queensland’s aerospace industry and create high-value, knowledge-based jobs
  • to enhance Queensland’s level of industry capability to access new global supply chain opportunities and international markets
  • promote Queensland as a preferred destination for aerospace capability, servicing both local and global markets.

Details on these strategies including identified opportunities and current/future investments can be found here.

Beef processing

The Queensland Government works in partnership with the industry to deliver the actions under the Queensland Beef Processing Strategy. The Queensland Beef Processing industry plays a critical role in Australia’s food supply chain. Its growth means a significant boost to the state economy, creating jobs and supporting regional communities.

some of the sector’s priorities include enhancing industry engagement and representation, ensuring efficient movement of livestock and freight, building and retaining a skilled workforce and investing in supply chain and processing efficiency.

The details of these strategies for the 10-year beef strategy plan can be found here.

Biofutures

The Queensland Government’s biofutures 10-year roadmap and action plan are to build a A$1 billion sustainable and export-oriented industrial biotechnology and bioproducts sector that attracts significant international investment and to create regional, high-value and knowledge-intensive jobs.

The Queensland biofutures sector was initiated in 2016 to capitalise on the state’s opportunities for economic development, regional diversification and job creation. With covid impacting the nation’s food and fuel security and supply chains, came with it were opportunities to develop new and existing bioproducts and biobased industries.

Significant advances in the biofutures sector have seen the Queensland’s bioeconomy well-positioned to deliver bioenergy, biochemicals, and bioplastics.

The state’s strategies include providing direct support for specific industry development initiatives, identifying and promoting the opportunities available for investment in Queensland and providing strong government leadership to create and maintain an attractive environment for investment.

The details of these strategies are found here.

Biomedical

The Queensland Government endeavours that by 2027 the state will be a regionally integrated and globally competitive Asia-Pacific biomedical industry hub. Launched in 2017 the biomedical sector has played a vital role in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic; from developing cutting edge advancements in diagnostics and vaccines to pivoting to the local manufacture of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The sector will continue to play an important role in the state’s economic recovery with support given to biomedical companies to attract and retain highly-skilled, high-value jobs and to increase the state’s sovereign capability to produce medical goods and respond to future pandemics.

Current strategies in place include supporting Queensland’s startups to prosper and successfully scale up, supporting existing businesses to grow and attract new businesses to Queensland and promoting capabilities to attract investment and facilitate alliances. The details of these strategies are found here.

Defence jobs

During the pandemic, the defence sector continued to grow with some businesses diversifying their manufacturing capabilities to produce items such as PPE (personal protective equipment). South East Queensland is now home to the most advanced military vehicle manufacturing facility in Australia.

The Queensland Defence Industries has a 10-year roadmap and action plan with strategies including growing the state’s defence industry capability, significantly increasing the state’s defence industry contribution to the national and global market and promoting Queensland’s defence industry capabilities. The details of the strategies are found here.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is a clean, renewable fuel that can be produced from a variety of sources including renewables such as solar, wind and biomass. It can be used to transport, power supply and a range of industrial processes.

The Queensland hydrogen industry strategy focuses on supporting innovation, facilitating private sector investment, ensuring an effective policy framework, building community awareness and confidence, and facilitating skills development for new technology. Further information can be found here.

METS

The METS sector (mining equipment, technology and services) is one of Australia’s largest. The sector contributes to the Australian economy with an estimated 15% of GDP and supports over 1.1 million jobs which are almost 10% of all full-time employment.

Growth and opportunities in the METS sector include professional and technical services, technical equipment manufacturing and information and operational technology. Further information can be found here.

Resources recovery

The Queensland Government’s vision for the sustainable resource recovery industry includes job creation, workforce upskilling opportunities and building capacity and new markets in regional Queensland.

As the state gears toward a zero-waste society, targets to develop markets for recycled and repurposed material by working with industry to divert waste from landfills and converting it into a valuable resource are in the works.

Industry roadmaps

The government of Queensland has developed a range of industry roadmaps and strategies as part of its Jobs Fund. The Queensland Jobs Fund brings together industry development programs to boost the state’s industry footprint, create jobs and strengthen Queensland’s economy.

Efforts in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, biofutures, biomedical, defence and the METS sector have been outlined here.

Superyacht strategy

The maritime sector has grown during covid with travel limitations driving the demand for maritime vessels and their repair and sustainment. The 5-year superyacht strategy in Queensland includes 4 priorities which are:

  • supportive, clear and well-communicated policy
  • to promote infrastructure to facilitate industry growth
  • to promote Queensland as a global superyacht destination and
  • to support and develop Queensland’s superyacht supply chain.
